Maximizing Small Closet SpaceWorking with a small closet space can be challenging, and there may be times where you feel like your closet is overflowing. It takes some expert organizational strategies to make a small closet space work for you, particularly if you have a lot of clothing, but with a little planning and creativity, you can make the space feel much larger than it is. Here are 5 tips to maximize your closet space.

1. Install wire shelving.

Wire shelving is an incredibly helpful tool for anyone struggling with a small closet. It's affordable, configurable to any space, and comes in a variety of different sizes. Wire shelving works as a traditional shelf, perfect for folded clothes or shoes, but can also work as a place to hang your clothes because of the slats. It really does double duty so you can use every inch of the space appropriately.

2. Make the most of your vertical space.

Even the tiniest closets often offer lots of vertical space to use, and you can really take advantage of it by building vertical racks for your accessories. At the very top of your closet, you can have extra shelving for items you don't use as often, and just keep a step stool nearby for times when you need to reach them. On the bottom, you can customize the space with shoe racks, so that your shoes sit under your hanging clothes.

3. Stack your hangers.

When shopping for hangers for your closet, look for ones that can stack together. They usually have a hole through the middle of the hanger where the next hanger can securely loop through. They might be a little bit more expensive, but they're worth it in the long run, because you can double or triple the amount of hanging space available to you.

4. Add hooks on the back of the closet door.

If you need extra space to store your accessories, consider adding some hooks onto the back of your door. You can buy stick-on hooks very inexpensively at many stores, and they're easy to apply to any surface. You can then use these hooks to store anything from scarves to coats to tank tops.

5. Add lighting.

Although this trick won't actually add any space to your closet, it will go a long way towards making it feel bigger. Just putting a few overhead or side lights in will make it much easier to find the items you are looking for.
